Graduate Visa to Skilled Worker: A Guide for Indian Students in the UK (2026)
How Indian graduates in the UK can switch from the Graduate visa to a Skilled Worker visa before time runs out. Covers eligibility, salary rules including the new entrant rate, timelines, and the mistakes that cost people their stay.
The Short Answer
Yes, Indian students on a UK Graduate visa can switch to a Skilled Worker visa without leaving the UK, as long as they get a job offer from a licensed sponsor and apply before their Graduate visa expires. Most recent graduates can use the lower new entrant salary rate, which is 70% of the going rate for the job with a minimum of £33,400 a year. The Graduate visa cannot be extended, so the real challenge is finding a sponsor in time.
Use the free Graduate Visa Switch Planner below to see exactly how much time you have, then read on for each step.

The Clock Starts Earlier Than You Think
Most Indian students do not run out of options. They run out of time. GOV.UK says the Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027 (3 years if you have a PhD). You cannot extend it.
Inside that window you need to find a role, pass interviews, wait for your employer to assign a Certificate of Sponsorship, and submit your application. If any of those steps slips, you can find yourself with a job offer but no time left to switch.
Who Can Switch
To switch to a Skilled Worker visa, GOV.UK says you need:
- A job offer from an employer on the Home Office Register of Licensed Sponsors
- A Certificate of Sponsorship from that employer
- A job in an eligible occupation code
- A salary that meets the rules for your role
- English at the required level. A UK degree taught in English is one way to prove this
You must apply online before your current visa expires. GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 8 weeks.
Salary Thresholds, Including the New Entrant Rate
This is where many graduates get caught out, because there are two sets of numbers.
The standard rule. GOV.UK says you usually need to be paid the higher of £41,700 a year or the going rate for your occupation code.
The new entrant rate. If you are on a Graduate visa, or your most recent visa in the last 2 years was a Graduate visa, you can be paid 70% of the going rate, with a minimum of £33,400 a year. The same applies if you are under 26 or were on a Student visa in the last 2 years. GOV.UK says your total stay on this basis cannot be more than 4 years, including time you have already spent on a Graduate visa. Full details are on when you can be paid less.
An example. The going rate for programmers and software developers (occupation code 2134) is £54,700 a year in the Appendix Skilled Occupations. At the new entrant rate, 70% of that is £38,300. So a graduate developer offered £40,000 could qualify as a new entrant, but would need to reach £54,700 to meet the standard rule.
Medium-skilled jobs. Some roles, such as data analysts (code 3544), are classed as medium skilled. GOV.UK says these only qualify if they are on the immigration salary list or the temporary shortage list. Always ask which occupation code your employer will use.

A Realistic Timeline
There are no official milestones for job hunting, so plan backwards from the dates GOV.UK does set:
- Your Graduate visa end date. This is the hard deadline. Your Skilled Worker application must be submitted before it.
- Your Certificate of Sponsorship. Your employer has to assign this before you can apply. Ask early how long their process takes, especially at large firms with dedicated immigration teams.
- Your decision. Usually within 8 weeks of applying from inside the UK. You must not travel abroad until it arrives.
The safest approach is to start applying to licensed sponsors in your first few months on the Graduate visa, not your last. The Graduate Visa Switch Planner turns your end date into a week by week plan.
How to Find a Sponsor Before Your Visa Runs Out
- Only apply to licensed sponsors. Check every employer on the Sponsor Checker before you spend time on an application.
- Search verified sponsor jobs. Every role on Hiredge visa sponsorship jobs comes from an employer on the Home Office register.
- Set up alerts. A job alert with the sponsorship filter on sends you new roles from licensed sponsors automatically.
- Talk to your current employer. If you already work somewhere on your Graduate visa, check whether they are on the register. Switching with an employer who already knows your work is often the fastest route.
- Target employers who hire graduates. Large IT and consulting firms are a common route for Indian graduates. See UK companies that sponsor Indian IT professionals and whether Amazon, Deloitte and Accenture sponsor Indian applicants.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Leaving it too late. The Graduate visa cannot be extended. A late offer does not buy you extra time.
- Assuming any employer can sponsor. Only employers on the Home Office register can issue a Certificate of Sponsorship.
- Ignoring the occupation code. A medium-skilled code that is not on a shortage list will not work, whatever the salary.
- Forgetting the 4 year cap. The new entrant rate counts your Graduate visa time. Plan for a salary that meets the standard rule when you extend.
- Travelling while your application is pending. GOV.UK says you must not leave the Common Travel Area until you get a decision.
- Paying for sponsorship. No genuine employer sells a Certificate of Sponsorship. Read how to spot a fake UK job offer.
